The Computational Science for Undergraduate Research Experiences (CSURE) REU site project will direct a group of undergraduate students to explore the emergent computational science models and techniques proven to work in a number of data and compute intensive applications using the supercomputers at the National Institute for Computational Sciences (NICS) located at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Each student accepted by the program receives a stipend of $500 per week and, if necessary, a travel stipend of up to $1000.  In addition, students may receive $210/per week for the housing at UT apartment.

Independent Studies

Independent study courses in the Computer Science program are student guided study which are used:
  • Faculty and students explore subjects not covered by regular curricular;
  • Research topics appeal to both faculty and students;
They are not designed to replace regular courses, or used as alternative schedules.

We often see interesting projects, for example:
Kenneth May and Seth Kress, Enhancement of DARS (Spring 2014, advsior: Dr. Salem)
This research project aims to create an simulation environment that allows the security aspect of ad hoc networks to be analyzed more closely by implementing AODV.

CS 525 Software Testing in Spring 2014

CS 525 Software Testing & Quality Assurance (Wednesday 6:20-8:50pm) was on the edge of being cancelled because of low enrolment, but we have been making an argument to keep it.  If anyone is still looking for an elective computer science course, please consider this course for following reasons:
  1. We may not be able to offer it again in two years;
  2. This is an important and pragmatic subject, especially for experienced programmers;
  3. The instructor has extensive experiences in software engineering.
